The women in all of the "Sister" series have no mouths. Because of this, the paintings immediately reminded me of Las Girlfriends, by Sandra Cisneros. In the poem, the women try to fight back against those who harass them, but at the end of the day, the harassing never stops. This is true of real life, as well. No matter how hard women fight sexual harassment, there is still a long way to go before we end it completely. Because the efforts of the women in the poem to fight their harassers go unheard, it is almost as if the women had been silent in the first place. The women in the painting have no mouths, and therefore can not speak, and in this sense they portray the women in the poem because they, too, are perpetually silenced.
